Stadt. Land. Bühne.

Freie Szene unterwegs in Chemnitz

The State Association of Independent Theatres in Saxony (Landesverband der Freien Theater in Sachsen e.V.) is implementing a mobile mini-festival of the Independent Performing Arts in Saxony in 2026: Stadt. Land. Bühne. brings current productions from Saxony’s independent performing arts scene into the town and city centres of both smaller and larger communities. Theatre, dance, and performance enter into direct dialogue with public space and local audiences.

Between April and August 2026, the project will tour through Görlitz, Zittau, and Chemnitz, creating synergies between established festivals and Saxony’s independent performing arts sector.

Open Call

For the final tour stop in Chemnitz, taking place on 29 August 2026 as part of the KOSMOS Festival, we are seeking a small selection of three to five artistic contributions from Saxony’s independent performing arts sector.

KOSMOS Chemnitz is a cultural festival in the city centre that combines music, social and civic events, sports, and the arts. In 2025, the festival attracted more than 115,000 visitors. It offers a diverse programme featuring artists, musicians, initiatives, businesses, and sports personalities.

The selected independent performing arts productions will be presented on our mobile stage as part of the official festival programme.

Requirements

We are seeking small-scale, technically low-complexity artistic formats from the independent performing arts that are suitable for presentation in public space. These may include short performance, dance, or theatre pieces; excerpts from existing productions; work-in-progress formats; participatory projects; site-specific or urban-space interventions; or artistic pitches.

Duration per contribution: approximately 20–45 minutes (with the possibility of multiple presentations throughout the festival day).

Applications are welcome from individual artists, duos, or small groups working in the independent performing arts whose primary place of artistic practice is in Saxony. Membership in the State Association of Independent Theatres in Saxony (LFTS) is not required.

Framework Conditions

Applications must be submitted by 15 July 2026 exclusively via email as one combined PDF document to: assistenz@freie-theater-sachsen.de. Please use the subject line: Application: Freie Szene unterwegs – Chemnitz

Incomplete applications or submissions received after the deadline cannot be considered.

The artistic contributions are selected by local practitioners and initiatives:

  • Gabi Reinhardt – artist and board member of the Verband der Freien Darstellenden Künste in Chemnitz e.V.
  • Alexander Müller – former employee of the City of Chemnitz’s Youth Welfare Office and volunteer in the Chemnitz 2025 Capital of Culture volunteer programme
