Knowing how to respond to anti-democratic attacks on art and culture

Arts and culture are increasingly confronted with attacks from anti-democratic forces and their affiliates. In the so-called Kulturkampf (“culture war”) from the political right, defamation, attempts to exert influence, and even threats have become part of the reality of artistic work in many places. The central challenge is how to respond without putting oneself at risk, burning out, restricting one’s own artistic practice, or crossing personal boundaries. Independent artists and smaller organizations in particular face considerable pressure, making sustainable strategies, confidence in action, and reliable support structures all the more urgent.

The conference organized by Weiterdenken – Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony and the Association of Independent Theatres in Saxony (Landesverband der Freien Theater in Sachsen e.V.) addresses precisely these challenges. It does so in a concrete and practice-oriented way: experts from the fields of politics, law, public relations, counseling, training, and research will provide clear analyses, share their experiences, and present practical approaches. At the same time, the conference offers an opportunity to build networks, learn from one another, and jointly develop perspectives for a supportive and resilient artistic practice.
